The Mercedes CLS is a luxury automobile that is aimed at the luxury market. It can come in the form of a coupe or fastback, and the vehicle is manufactured in Sindelfingen, a city in Germany. Like many cars in the luxury market, the CLS comes with four doors, and it falls under the full size category. The smallest engine it can have is a 3.5 L V6, and the largest is a 6.2 L V8. The other engine types it may come with include the 5.0 L V8, the 5.5 L V8, and the 3.2 L V6 Diesel. The CLS is based off the Mercedes E-Class. It was first introduced in Europe in 2004.
The CLS comes with a seven speed automatic transmission, and the
introduction of this vehicle marks the return of the company to the executive size market. The last car to fall under this category was the W124. The company designed the CLS to compete with the likes of BMW, particularly their BMW 3-Series brand. Another goal of Mercedes was to combine the the strength of a coupe with the comfort of a sedan. It should be noted that the CLS has been widely popular, and its success has caused many rival companies to produce similar products.
During the development of the CLS, the company hoped it could battle the popularity of the Jaguar. The company aimed the CLS at the Jaguar market. However, while many rival companies have produced cars which are similar to the CLS, Jaguar has not. While the car was not available for sale until 2004, the concept was showcased at the Frankfurt International Motorshow in 2003. The CLS 55 AM is another variation of the brand that is available, but only 3,000 will be produced on an annual basis. The introductory price for a CLS starts at just over $65,000.
